Fine dining without draining your bank account - that is the XIX experience.

What was once Founders at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel - which was the place where red velvet curtains and stuffy chairs went to die - XIX has been transformed into a clean, soothing dining room overlooking the Avenue of the Arts from its 19th floor location within the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue.

Now, dining in the main room can still be quite expensive - but I've an offer that will make it well worth the trip to the 19th floor!

BTW - to get to XIX, enter the main lobby of the Bellevue and walk past the main bank of elevators - to the left of the security desk and you'll find two elevators to your left. These place you within XIX when they open onto the 19th floor. Once you get the lay of the land, then you can just take the main bank of elevators to the 19th floor and navigate yourself to XIX.

When you first enter XIX from the elevator, you are in a grand rotunda; complete with comfortable seating as well as a quaint outdoor balcony that offers a wonderful view of the city, south. This is the XIX Cafe. Then, to the right of this rotunda you'll find a hall that connects you to the OTHER rotunda, which is their main dining room. However, within the hallway is one of the best hideaway bars in the city; complete with leather chairs and a fireplace during the winter season! A great night-cap location after a night of theatre.

The XIX Cafe is where you can partake in the Cafe Dinner menu - for $30 per person you get access to what I think is the 2nd best salad bar in the city (the first being Fogo de Chao). The salad bar offers a mix of greens, vegetables and several pasta dishes - along with meats and cheeses and fresh breads. You also get to select one of five entrees from the menu; including a daily fish dish, a wonderful flatbread pizza and a mouthwatering steak entree.

Once you're finished your entree, you head to their dessert table - all that is needed is a chair so you never have to leave! From fresh-baked brownies, to parfaits to mini-cheesecakes - you will easily channel your favorite child character from Willie Wonka as you dive into the dessert displays. Just be grateful you don't have to walk down 19 flights of stairs afterwards!

Not to Get All Preachy But…

While we have the opportunity to enjoy grog fests, corn dog roundups, and IHOPs, the sad truth is that a lot of people don’t. The good news is that there are a lot of folks out there trying to fight the good fight. Memphis Taproom is getting all kinds of involved: They are supporting Manna’s [...]

'Naked Pint': Chuck the chardonnay

BABES AND BEER go together like mud and wrestling - which is to say, it's a guy thing. Which, incidentally, explains why so many women reach for the grape instead of grain.

A fresh look at three little fishes

Sardines, anchovies, smelts. To know them is to love them. Getting to know them properly is the issue, but all that's needed is a "fresh" look.

Italian restaurateur finds success at lower price

Joseph Tucker, who got his start in Philly in the 1990s with fancier Italian establishments (Joseph's, Joseph's on the Avenue, Pompeii), is thriving nowadays with lower price points and more modest aspirations.

Women at the top: 15 exec chefs reveal their ingredients for success

THE KITCHEN is still a man's world. But that's changing, at least in Philadelphia. While women may do most of the cooking at home, in restaurant kitchens across America, more often than not, the top toque is a man.

Rush Hour Gourmet

This recipe contains so many of my favorite ingredients - Italian tuna, Greek olives, capers, and mozzarella cheese - that I knew it would soon become a regular in the rotation of weeknight meals.

A Taste Of Cyprus At Kanella

At Philadelphia’s acclaimed Cypriot restaurant Kanella, you will not find fusion, which Chef Konstantinos Pitsillides calls “confusion.”  Rather, you will experience the diverse culinary influences of the world cultures that have occupied and settled the chef’s native Cyprus over the centuries: Turkish, French, Venetian, Arab, North African, English and Greek, each of whom have left [...]

All Points Po’ Boy

The po’ boy is the quintessential New Orleans sandwich. The crusty French bread, and toppings varying from breaded shrimp, and soft-shell crab, to roast beef au jus, help to tell a story of the sandwich makers behind the counter. In ten days, The New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival will bring together 40 restaurants to share [...]

Around The Web: America’s Sexiest Sandwich

The term “food porn” generally refers to stunning close-up photos of food, but over at Heavy.com, they’ve adopted the more literal definition and conducted a national survey to determine which sandwich America most wants to… um… make babies with. Dubbed the search for America’s sexiest sandwich, Heavy.com enlisted the services of a market research [...]

Toasty Roast Pork At Wasko’s

Submitted by Unbreaded reader Shane D. Have a sandwich you love? Submit it to us and we’ll post it on the site. Philadelphia might be the home of the cheesesteak, but again, and again, we are seeing a rise in popularity of the Italian roast pork sandwich. According to Shane D., you don’t have to be [...]
