Hey Howie,
I'm glad to hear the first meet up was fun! Thanks for updating us. I am just getting over a sinus cold so I felt it best I didn't show up and infect others. I really do hope to make the next one. Provided I'm not sick, of course.

I certainly hope that everyone who came out last night had a fun and interesting time at our Foodie Group meetup...I certainly enjoyed meeting everyone and want to thank you guys for coming out. A special thanks to Scoats and his crew for hosting the gathering in such a warm and welcoming environment...the Grey Lodge is certainly a foodie friendly place. It was great to take a break from 'real life' and sit and talk with folks who share a passion for good ingredients, and good food. I look forward to hangin out with you guys again next month!

It looks as though everyone liked coming enough to set future dates for steady meetups...so, it looks as though the First Monday of each month will be our target meetup date! That makes Monday, November 3rd at 7pm the next meetup...same place, new great ingredients to share, and hopefully some fresh faces as well.

If you need more info, send me a message here at Philly Grubbers and I'll get back to you asap!

OK, so this isn't really a restaurant, but there's a great russian grocery store that I wanted to tell you about called Net Cost

11701 Bustleton Ave
Philadelphia, PA 19116
(267) 672-2500

They have great prepared food including a rocking beet salad with walnuts and parsley, a carrot and walnut salad with garlic, and chicken meatballs in tomato sauce. Extensive bakery (the deserts are scrumptious), selection of teas and more varieties of yoghurt than i've ever seen in one place before. Oh and they carry chocolate covered plums which are simply out of this world. It's food only here, but if you're in the neighborhood definitely stop by and grab some dinner. You won't be sorry.

Meat Lovers Rejoice!
This past Saturday night, I finally got to try Picanha Brazilian Grill at 6501 Castor Ave. I am a fan of the Churrascaria, with men bringing around swords of meat. I have been to many of the chains (Fogo de Chao, Texas de Brazil) in several cities. So, when I heard about this Mom & Pop place in the NE, I knew I needed to go. These Brazilian steak houses are great places for foodies to bring picky eaters...unless they don't like meat. My last boyfriend was such a person. He only like fast-food, pizza and boneless-skinless chicken breast. Gee...I wonder why it didn't last... Anyway, my new guy is also a picky eater (Why me????) but is a little broader in his food spectrum. So, after a few months of things going well, I asked him if I could take him to dinner, and the destination was a surprise.

He was tickled pick, to say the least. At one point, my big, bald, tattood date giggled, and said it was like a dream come true. So, what did I think? I found the place a little odd. It was definitely not as polished as the chains. But, I sort of liked the quirkiness. The place was in an old diner, and the new owners did nothing to hide that. Pink, pleather booths anyone?

But, the fact that this was a friendly BYOB and that the price was literally half of what the chains charge can not be ignored. The food? Pretty damn good, too. My date and I were little more dressed up then the rest of the custmers. But, now I just know for next time. Most of the staff were friendly, making you feel like you were coming to their house for dinner, and the salad bar items were unique.

If you like meat, I say grab a bottle of wine or a 6-pack, and get yourself to Castor Ave.

Had breakfast at the Dining Car this morning -- SO good! I got the Eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was so buttery, it made me weak in the knees. It was served with a piece of butter cake -- YUM!

Here's a couple places I really like:

Uzbekistan - 11903 Bustleton Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19116

That's the original place. They also have a place pretty much across the street with a patio. not high on atmosphere, but really cool russian food. Had dinner there this past weekend. Great Salads (potato salad with chicken, pickles, dill; slices of grilled egplant wrapped around shredded carrots and walnuts held together with a slightly sweet cheese kind of mixture), wonderful bread, beef strogonoff and chicken dumplings. Uzbekistan shows asian influences (eg indian) as well. Pretty inexpensive (a friend and I had 3 salads, 1 appetizer, bread, 2 main dishes, 2 desserts, 2 beverages for about $46 before tip and we took enough home for at least one more meal!).

Taj-India 10863 Bustleton Ave
Great vegetarian indian food. Decor is not much and the service can be slow, but the food totally rocks and, again, great prices. I love the Masala Dosa (spiced potatoes cooked in butter and wrapper in a chickpea pancake that gets crispy), the Papri Chat (chick peas, onions, potatoes, crispy things, tossed in tamarind sauce and chutney). Entrees were also awesome and the rose lassi is sublime. Skip the ice cream (not very good).
Here's a link that includes an online menu to taj:

Both these places also do take-out if you are so inclined.

I'd love to read some restaurant recommendations for the NE... so hard to find good food here!

There is so much amazing ethnic food in the Northeast, this should be a great group.

We’re Gonna Come Right Out And Say It: BOBBY FLAY GO HOME

“Hey guys, are you sure? Because I’d REALLY like to bro down with all of my cool bros on the Penn campus. Gimme some up top!” There are those among us who would say that Bobby Flay, celebrity chef and probable inspiration for the male half of the “Two A-Holes” skits on Saturday Night Live, knows [...]

Village Whiskey

Bourbon and burgers have long been two of my favorite food groups. But when I behold them side-by-side in their highest forms, posed on the zinc bar-top at Village Whiskey, it's clear this duo is the ultimate height of low-down American decadence.

Drink

Gazing among the many spirit wonders at Village Whiskey, my eyes settle on the smallest of bottles and a curious pedigree: bourbon from New York?

O Christmas cookies!

At 33d and Arch one afternoon last week, in the sixth-floor precincts of Drexel University's student-run Academic Bistro (can someone please hotten up that name?), the platters of Christmas cookies - chocolate stars and pliable brittles and blond men redolent of ginger - reposed patiently, awaiting their audience.

Village Whiskey

Star chef Jose Garces has raised the "bar" high, with a corner saloon that turns out Philly's best burger in a drinker's paradise outfitted with a stunning wall of whiskey and serious mixologists working cocktail magic. But good luck getting in. The oddly designed little space coupled with the no-reservation policy makes it convenient only for small parties at off hours. At other times, expect hour-plus waits for what is otherwise a singular burger-bourbon fix.

Joe Sixpack: Holiday cheer with some wintry beer?

ENTERTAIN at home? What could I have been thinking about in last week's column when I shared all those cockamamie tips for celebrating the holidays at home?

Unbreaded

Make The Most Of That Meal

Let’s face it, with the holiday season in full swing, our wallets are feeling a little tight. A great way to stretch those dollars even further is to create meals with leftovers in mind. This flank steak two ways from goodLife {eats} will not only help you woo that Friday night date, but makes for [...]

Sandwich Bites: Flay throws down at UPenn, Ampersandwich, Torta Dinners, and Smoked Pastrami

• Last year rumors swirled of Bobby Flay officially throwing down his fast casual burger joint at the University of Pennsylvania. In a recent interview Flay confirms that his next location will indeed take root at a Pennsylvania university. [Grub Street Philadelphia] • Stuff this in our stocking: Ampersandwich Tee [Simplebits] • El Camino Real’s new chef [...]

Avoid Bagel Related Injuries

The bagel can be eaten many ways, with a nice schmear of cream cheese, or a delicious bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. It’s almost as if the bagel is a spiritual food, always a mainstay along with lox and whitefish at parties celebrating a new birth, and those that bring grieving families together after a [...]

No Matter How You Cut It…

When building that perfect sandwich, the one that fills you up and satisfies you like no other, the last thing one might think twice about is cutting it in half. Most people are programmed based on how their sandwiches were cut for them at a young age. But we’ve pondered this for a long time; [...]
